Barossa Valley Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 parkland course on Golf Course Road in Nuriootpa, in the heart of South Australia's Barossa Valley wine region. The club traces its roots to 1905, when it was founded as the Angaston Golf Club on land donated by local grazier John Dalwitz; it affiliated with the South Australian Golf Association the following year. In the 1950s the club purchased 162 acres at Kalimna from Penfolds Family Wines and commissioned Melbourne golf course architect and Kingston Heath greenkeeper Vern Morcom to design a new 18-hole layout.
The course opened in September 1962, and the club took its current name in 1968. The course occupies bushland set among vineyards, and kangaroos and native birdlife are regularly seen around the fairways. It measures 6,026 metres from the men's tees, with generous fairways, rough, and strategically placed bunkers.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,026m (6,590 yards). Designed by Vernon Morcom, the course originally opened in 1962. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Full Membership, Social Membership, Country Membership, Restricted Membership, Pro Shop, Putting Green, Driving Range, Practice Bunker, and 2 more.
The club began in 1905 as the Angaston Golf Club, a nine-hole course built on land north of Angaston made available by local grazier John Dalwitz. It affiliated with the South Australian Golf Association in 1906, and its links course formally opened in 1914. When Dalwitz died in 1953, ownership of that original land passed to the club he had long supported.
By the mid-1950s the members were looking for room to build a full 18 holes. In 1954 the club bought 162 acres at Kalimna, a few kilometres north of Nuriootpa, from Penfolds Family Wines, intending to call the new layout the "John Dalwitz Links" in honour of its benefactor.
Vern Morcom, best known as the long-serving greenkeeper at Kingston Heath who built out Alister MacKenzie’s bunkering there, took on the Barossa job as one of the private design commissions he pursued after the war. His plan, dated April 1959, favoured greens and hazards that sat quietly into the existing land rather than imposing artificial shapes on it.
Construction relied on sand-scrape greens that stayed in play through the 1960s, 70s and 80s, which is one reason the finished green complexes only loosely resemble Morcom’s original pencil sketches. The front nine, laid out over gently rising and falling ground with bushland framing several holes, is generally regarded as the more interesting side; the holes toward the eastern part of the property sit on flatter, more open land.
The new course opened in September 1962, and the Angaston Golf Club was renamed Barossa Valley Golf Club Incorporated in 1968 to reflect its new home. The layout’s two nines have at times been played in reverse order — swapping which nine opens the round changes whether golfers tee off into the rising or setting sun — before settling back into the sequence Morcom intended. In 1995 the club renovated the course and converted to full grass greens, replacing the sand scrapes used since construction.
Barossa Valley Golf Club remains member-owned, with course competitions on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and a full calendar of club championships and trophy events through the year. Visitors are welcome seven days a week. The course sits among vineyards and bushland typical of the wider Barossa Valley, and kangaroos and native birdlife are a regular sight for golfers on the course.
The Vine Inn Barossa Community Hotel in nearby Nuriootpa is the club’s major sponsor and offers a stay-and-play arrangement for visiting golfers.
