Origins

Belvoir Park was founded in 1927 on a large wooded property close to Belfast. On the advice of an experienced golfer involved with the project, the club employed Harry S. Colt to design the course.

Colt wrote that the land could provide both a strong test and enjoyment for players.

Did You Know?
Around 40,000 additional trees were planted during the period associated with 1958 club captain Dr J. A. Smiley.

Design Philosophy

Colt used the mature woodland and natural contours to separate holes and create strategic angles without relying on excessive artificial construction. The club states that the basic routing has remained largely unaltered since his design.

Development

Later changes concentrated more on vegetation than rerouting. Dr J. A.

Smiley, club captain in 1958, was closely involved with planting approximately 40,000 trees, including Scots pine, Douglas fir, larch and cypress. The woodland between the 15th and 7th became known as Smiley's Wood.

Recognition

Belvoir Park has hosted the Irish Open, Irish PGA and Irish Close. The club also records praise from prominent golfers including Rory McIlroy, Fred Daly and Christy O'Connor Senior.

Today

Belvoir Park remains an 18-hole Colt parkland course with visitor access, practice facilities and a clubhouse. The club publishes current 2026 visitor and winter green-fee schedules.
