Origins

Golf was incorporated into the estate as part of its development as a sporting destination. J. F.

Abercromby designed the course in 1926, with the resort stating that the ambition was to create a course comparable with contemporary destination courses at Gleneagles and Turnberry.

Did You Know?
Bovey Castle records that Henry Cotton regarded the seventh as one of his favourite holes in Britain.

Design Philosophy

Abercromby's routing makes use of the estate's natural ground and the River Bovey, which is a recurring feature through the early part of the course. The resort's own historical description singles out the third, sixth and seventh holes in connection with the river.

Development

The course opened in 1930. More recently Bovey Castle has invested in its golf infrastructure, including sheltered driving-range facilities and work to the golf shop and members' areas.

Recognition

Bovey Castle states that the course quickly attracted national attention after opening. Its seventh hole also has a documented connection with Open champion Henry Cotton, who listed it among his favourite holes in Britain.

Today

The Abercromby course remains part of the Bovey Castle hotel estate and serves members, hotel guests and visiting golfers, supported by practice, teaching and equipment-hire facilities.
