Breckenridge Golf Club is a municipally owned 27-hole facility in Breckenridge, Colorado, comprising the Bear, Beaver and Elk nines. All three are Jack Nicklaus Signature designs. The Bear opened in 1985 on land historically known as Buffalo Flats; the Beaver followed in 1987, creating the original 18-hole course.
The Town of Breckenridge expanded the facility again in 2001 with the Elk nine. The courses sit at more than 9,300 feet above sea level and move between native grassland, wetlands and wooded mountain terrain. Nicklaus Design states that an 18-hole combination can reach 7,276 yards from the Nicklaus tees.
The course is a 27-hole golf course. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the course originally opened in 1985. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Pro shop, Practice facilities, Golf carts.
The Town of Breckenridge developed the first nine on Buffalo Flats, land associated with the area's early mining era. Jack Nicklaus designed the Bear nine, which opened in 1985.
Each nine uses the high-altitude mountain environment differently while maintaining a similar overall difficulty. Native grassland, wooded areas and wetlands form much of the landscape, while the altitude materially affects ball flight.
The Beaver nine opened in 1987 and completed the original 18. Strong demand led the town to commission a third Nicklaus nine, the Elk, which opened in 2001 and introduced the greatest elevation changes of the three.
The Town of Breckenridge continues to operate the facility as public municipal golf, rotating the three nines to create daily 18-hole combinations.
