Golf Course Architect
John Sutherland served as Secretary (and later Town Clerk) of Royal Dornoch Golf Club from 1883 to 1941 and played a quiet but influential role as a golf course designer in northern Scotland. He laid out the original links at Wick Golf Club (Reiss) in 1906 and guided its redesign and extension to 18 holes, and was closely involved in modifications at Royal Dornoch, including designing the 12th hole named in his honour and introducing strategic bunkering.
His contributions were chiefly local and functional, blending traditional links principles with the natural terrain; he also promoted the game through golf journalism.
