Capitol City Golf Club is an 18-hole public golf course in the Lacey-Olympia area of Washington. The club dates the course's opening to 1963, and golf-course references credit Canadian-American architect Norman H. Woods with the design.
Woods had previously worked for Stanley Thompson and later established his own practice in British Columbia. The par-72 layout measures 6,578 yards from the Black tees, with a course rating of 71.6 and slope of 128. Current published tee information also lists a 6,198-yard White course and a 5,535-yard Gold course.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,578 yards, course rating 71.6 and slope rating 128. Designed by Norman H. Woods, the course originally opened in 1963. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Golf Lessons, Power Cart Rental, Pull Cart Rental, Golf Club Rental, Restaurant.
Capitol City Golf Club emerged alongside the development of Capitol City Golf Club Estates southeast of Olympia. Records maintained by the homeowners association show that landowners, Thurston Development Company and Huntamer Water Company recorded the plat for the golf-course community on December 3, 1962. The golf club itself identifies 1963 as the year its 18-hole course opened.
Golf-course references credit Norman H. Woods with the design. Woods was a Canadian-trained architect who had spent roughly 15 years working under Stanley Thompson before establishing an independent practice in British Columbia.
No detailed contemporary statement from Woods describing his intentions for Capitol City was located. The surviving course nevertheless reflects a traditional mid-century approach: an 18-hole par-72 routing framed by mature trees, with relatively narrow fairways and greens protected by greenside bunkers. The club specifically emphasizes the course's drainage, an important practical design characteristic in western Washington's wet climate, and says it provides unusually dry playing conditions throughout the year.
The course and the surrounding residential community have remained closely connected since their development in the early 1960s. The Capitol City Golf Club Estates association records 426 lots or units today and notes that updated 2021 declarations brought the golf course back within the association. The course has continued operating as a public-access facility while also supporting memberships, men's and women's clubs, tournaments and junior golf participation.
Local tourism organisation Experience Olympia & Beyond records that Capitol City was voted best golf course in The Olympian's 2005 Best of South Sound publication. The club is also a participating facility in Washington Golf programs, including Youth on Course.
Capitol City continues as an 18-hole public golf facility serving the Olympia-Lacey area. The club publishes daily, twilight, senior, military and junior rates using a dynamic-pricing model, and maintains a driving range along with golf instruction and rental equipment. Fire Creek Grill provides on-site food and beverage service.
The club also stages the Capitol City Amateur and maintains separate men's and women's golf organisations.
