Origins

The golf course was created as part of the resort development at Carmelo and was inaugurated in 2000. Randy Thompson and Kelly Blake Moran were responsible for the design, with American Golf Course Design associated with its development. Contemporary accounts describe extensive earthworks in wet ground, with lakes created and excavated material used to form golf holes.

Design Philosophy

The project retained significant existing vegetation while using earth movement to turn low-lying and marshy ground into an 18-hole course. The resulting design uses lagoons, bunkering and shaped green complexes as recurring strategic elements.

Development

The course initially operated in association with the Carmelo resort. The club states that since late 2010 the course has operated as Carmelo Golf Club. The surrounding Carmelo Golf residential property encompasses approximately 270 hectares.

Recognition

Golf Digest has previously identified Carmelo as its leading course in Uruguay, while the course has also appeared in international course-ranking coverage.

Today

The club operates an 18-hole course together with a driving range, approach greens, putting green, minigolf and clubhouse facilities.
