About Carton House Golf Club - O'Meara Course

The O'Meara Course is one of two championship layouts at Carton House in Maynooth, County Kildare. Designed by major champion Mark O'Meara, the current course is a par-73 parkland layout measuring 7,165 yards from the blue championship tees. It uses the mature landscape of the Carton estate rather than the inland-links approach of the neighbouring Montgomerie Course.

Holes pass through old woodland and alongside the River Rye, with the estate's historic buildings and specimen trees retained as part of the setting. Current Carton House information gives a 71.4 course rating and 126 slope from the green tees. The resort provides a driving range, golf shop, changing facilities, professional instruction and dining at the Carriage House.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 73, 6,552m (7,165 yards). The course was designed by Mark O'Meara. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving range, Pro shop, Golf school, Practice facilities, Changing facilities, Restaurant.

Origins

The O'Meara was created as one of two modern championship courses within the historic Carton House estate. Mark O'Meara was commissioned to design the parkland layout, using ground north of the River Rye and incorporating the estate's mature woodland and established landscape.

Design Philosophy

O'Meara's routing works around existing specimen trees, woodland and the River Rye rather than imposing an inland-links character. The river becomes particularly relevant on the later holes, while the historic house and estate structures remain visible within the course setting.

Development

The O'Meara was joined by Colin Montgomerie's separate inland-links course, giving Carton House two contrasting championship layouts. The current O'Meara configuration is published at par 73 and 7,165 yards, superseding older references to a par-72, 7,006-yard version.

Recognition

The course hosted the 2005 Irish Amateur Championship. Carton House as a broader venue has hosted Irish Opens, World Amateur Team Championships and Women's Irish Opens, although those events have used different layouts and should not all be attributed to O'Meara.

Today

The O'Meara remains Carton House's parkland course, operating alongside the Montgomerie and supported by the resort's golf practice, teaching, retail and dining facilities.
