Origins

The club was established in 1913 on the grounds of old Rathfarnham Castle. It initially leased the land from William George Bailey and Adam Henry Gibson before purchasing it in 1917 for £8,250. Early members carried out much of the initial course planning.

Did You Know?
One of the club's earliest members was Douglas Hyde, later the first President of Ireland.

Design Philosophy

Harry S. Colt was engaged in 1926 to prepare a revised layout. His intervention gave the developing course a professional architectural framework while retaining the established Rathfarnham site.

Development

Planning for a comprehensive redesign of the greens and surrounds began in 1999. With assistance from Jeff Howes Golf Design, all 18 greens were reconstructed by 2003. A six-hole par-3 practice course known as the Valley opened in 2008, and fairway irrigation was significantly expanded in 2023.

Recognition

Castle has a long record of inter-club golf and hosts national family competitions. The Father and Son event dates to 1961, while the Mother and Daughter competition began in 2009.

Today

Castle remains an 18-hole parkland members' club in Rathfarnham with visitor and society access, extensive practice facilities and the separate six-hole Valley.
