About Castlerock Golf Club - Mussenden Course

The Mussenden Course is Castlerock Golf Club's principal 18-hole links and should be kept separate from the club's Bann Course. Castlerock began as a nine-hole club in 1901. After additional land was secured, Scottish professional and clubmaker Ben Sayers was commissioned to create an 18-hole course, formally opened in 1909.

Harry Colt was subsequently consulted on alterations around the late 1920s or 1930 period. The most substantial modern work came during the winter of 2017/18, when Martin Hawtree led a reconstruction programme affecting a significant part of the routing. The current course plays to par 73.

The course is an 18-hole links golf course. The course was designed by Ben Sayers. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Lodge, Restaurant, Caddies, Club hire, Electric trolley hire, Pull trolley hire, Buggy hire.

Origins

Castlerock Golf Club was founded in April 1901 with nine holes on the western part of the present property. Additional land was obtained in 1908 and Ben Sayers of North Berwick was engaged to create a full 18-hole layout. The expanded course formally opened in July 1909.

Development

Harry Colt was later consulted on changes to the links. Almost a century after the Sayers expansion, Castlerock undertook another major intervention: Martin Hawtree was engaged for reconstruction work carried out over the winter of 2017/18. The club's own pages differ on the exact number of holes changed, but both confirm that the work materially altered the championship layout.

Recognition

The Mussenden Course has hosted national amateur and professional championships and remains Castlerock's championship course.

Today

Castlerock operates the Mussenden and Bann courses as distinct layouts. Mussenden is open to visitors under seasonal pricing and remains the club's principal championship links.
