Golf Course Architect
Martin Grant Hawtree (born 1947 in Beckenham, Kent, England) is a third‑generation golf course architect who has led the family firm, Hawtree Limited, since the mid‑1980s. He holds degrees including a BA, an MCD, and a PhD in Urban Design, and succeeded his father in heading the practice in 1984 or 1985.
Under his leadership, the firm has completed hundreds of new designs and renovations worldwide, including renowned Open venues and links such as Lahinch, Portmarnock, Royal Birkdale, the Old Course at St Andrews, and Trump International courses. Martin is especially respected for his sensitive restorations of classic layouts—such as reinstating lost Alister MacKenzie features at Lahinch in 1999—and his work on courses like Golf de Carquefou in France, inaugurated in 1993.
His style emphasizes respect for original architects’ intent while meeting modern play requirements, and he remains active internationally in design and conservation of links golf.
