City Park Golf Course

Origins

The idea of placing municipal golf north of City Park had been discussed in Denver by the end of the 19th century, but the course itself took shape in 1913 on approximately 136 acres of rolling ground associated with the former City Park Dairy. Scottish-born architect Tom Bendelow laid out the early course. Denver's own City Park master-plan material records that the facility was built in 1913, expanded to 18 holes in 1918 and reached another established configuration in 1925.

Its creation represented a significant early municipal commitment to golf and public recreation. The historic golf property later became part of the Denver Park and Parkway System listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Design Philosophy

Bendelow's historic course used the site's rolling urban parkland and broad views toward downtown Denver and the Rocky Mountains. When Todd Schoeder was commissioned for the modern reconstruction, the brief was unusual: retain the identity of a century-old municipal course while making the same land function as major stormwater infrastructure. Schoeder's par-70 plan kept portions of the historic playing pattern rather than beginning with an entirely blank site.

Seven to eight old hole corridors were reused, but with additional width, contour and alternative playing lines. All 18 greens were rebuilt and enlarged by roughly 50 percent on average, 36 new bunkers were introduced, and the number and size of teeing areas increased. Natural-looking drainage and water-treatment channels were incorporated as strategic hazards so that the engineering function would read as part of the golf landscape rather than separate civil infrastructure.

Development

The most consequential change in City Park's history began when the course closed in 2017 for the Platte to Park Hill stormwater program. The project required large portions of the site to be regraded so the property could temporarily capture and slow floodwater from surrounding neighborhoods. Schoeder of GrassRoots Golf Design led the golf architecture, with Hale Irwin identified by Denver Golf as consultant.

The rebuilt facility added a full-length driving range, a roughly one-acre short-game practice area, a dedicated four-hole First Tee course, returning nines and a new clubhouse and maintenance complex. The design uses approximately 20 acres for stormwater detention and can temporarily accommodate about 227 acre-feet of water. Nearly all perimeter trees were preserved, while the reforestation program produced a reported net increase of roughly 500 trees.

City Park reopened to golfers with a soft opening on September 1, 2020.

Recognition

The redesign attracted attention primarily for combining public golf with flood-control infrastructure. The American Society of Golf Course Architects selected City Park and Todd Schoeder for its 2018 Design Excellence Recognition Program and later recognised the project with a 2019 Environmental Excellence Award. Engineering News-Record named it the 2020 Mountain States Best Project in the Water/Environment category and subsequently a national Best of the Best project in the same category.

The new clubhouse also achieved LEED Gold certification. These honours relate to the reconstructed facility and its engineering and environmental design rather than to competitive golf rankings.

Today

City Park remains part of the City and County of Denver's municipal golf system and is open to the public. The regulation course has four principal physical tee colours plus combination tees and forward family options. The longest Bronze configuration measures 6,703 yards at par 70.

Denver Golf uses dynamic green-fee pricing, with players booking online and senior or junior discounts applied at check-in when applicable. Practice facilities include a 25-station full-size range using grass and mats according to the weekly and seasonal schedule, along with short-game space. The clubhouse contains the golf shop, City Park Tavern and event facilities, while the four-hole First Tee layout provides dedicated space for youth instruction.
