Clontarf Golf & Bowling Club is an 18-hole golf club on Malahide Road in Dublin. The club itself was founded in 1912, initially playing on leased land at Mount Temple. Lease difficulties forced a move, and in 1921 the club secured land associated with Donnycarney House.
Harry Colt was commissioned to lay out a 12-hole course there, arranged as two loops of six holes; the new home was officially opened on 6 June 1923. Additional land allowed the course to expand to 18 holes, with the extra six available from June 1927 and the completed course officially opened in May 1928. The club says the present routing remains substantially the same as that 1927 layout apart from selected hazards and relocated greens.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 69, 5,391m (5,895 yards). Designed by Harry Colt, the course originally opened in 1912. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Golf Lessons, Restaurant, Bar, Dining, Membership.
Clontarf Golf Club was formed in January 1912 after negotiations secured land at Mount Temple. The original membership numbered 280, and the first course was formally opened in May 1912. The club's early organisation was unusual in Ireland for introducing a five-day membership category.
Lease problems forced the club to find a new home. In August 1921 it secured Dublin Corporation land attached to Donnycarney House and commissioned Harry Colt to lay out a 12-hole course in two six-hole loops. That site opened officially on 6 June 1923.
Further land was later acquired, allowing six more holes to open in June 1927; the complete 18-hole course was officially opened in May 1928. The club says the routing remains substantially recognisable today, aside from selected hazards and changes to several greens.
Clontarf continues as an 18-hole members' club that accepts visitor bookings. The men's Blue card is par 69 and measures 5,391 metres, while the women's Red card plays to par 71.
