Club Campestre Cariari is an 18-hole, par-71 course in Ciudad Cariari in Costa Rica's Central Valley. The club was inaugurated in 1973 and its official history credits American architect George Fazio with the golf-course design. Contemporary sources describe the layout at approximately 6,579 yards from its longest published configuration.
The course occupies part of a larger country-club property developed from land acquired in 1970 for the Ciudad Cariari project. Mature trees and the established landscape are important characteristics of the routing, which predates Costa Rica's later generation of coastal resort courses. The club has hosted national and international golf events since its early years.
The course is an 18-hole golf course. It plays to par 71, 6,016m (6,579 yards). Designed by George Fazio, the course originally opened in 1973. It is open to members and their guests. On-site facilities include Restaurant, Pro Shop, Golf Cart Hire, Caddies.
The course grew out of the Ciudad Cariari development. The club's official history records that in 1970 a group of businessmen including Rodrigo and José María Crespo, Miguel Barzuna, Francisco Peña, Rodrigo De Bedout and Edgar Jiménez acquired a large property along the former Coco Highway west of San José. Their plan extended beyond a social club to include a hotel, residential development and commercial facilities.
Cariari Country Club ultimately occupied 43 hectares within this project and was inaugurated in May 1973.
George Fazio was commissioned to design the golf course. The mature layout uses the established Central Valley terrain and tree cover rather than the open coastal character found at many newer Costa Rican resort courses. Secondary historical accounts credit Tom Fazio with involvement in construction.
The club has operated continuously as a wider sporting and social institution, with golf accompanied by tennis, swimming, gym and other facilities. Its golf operation now includes a pro shop and direct reservation service.
Cariari's historical significance comes from its place among Costa Rica's earliest full-length championship courses and from the national and international events staged there after its 1973 inauguration.
The 18-hole course remains part of Cariari Country Club. The golf operation is open daily and accepts reservations directly through the club.
