About Costa Rica Country Club

Costa Rica Country Club is a historic private sporting club in San Rafael de Escazú. Its golf course, known as Campo Jaime Solera Bennett, traces its origins to the club's formation in 1940. The club's own golf history credits Charles Lawrence Donovan as the principal designer and says he introduced characteristics associated with traditional Scottish links into the design.

The physical golf layout is nine holes and is played in differing configurations for a full round; published blue/white 18-hole figures list approximately 6,031 yards with a 71.6 course rating and 144 slope. The club itself was legally established on 15 November 1940 after a group led by Dr. Antonio Facio Ulloa and other early supporters developed the idea of a country club on Facio's property in Escazú.

The course is a 9-hole golf course. It plays to par 36, 5,515m (6,031 yards), course rating 71.6 and slope rating 144. Designed by Charles Lawrence Donovan, the course originally opened in 1940. It is a private members-only club.

Origins

The club's beginnings date to 1940, when a group including Dr. Antonio Facio Ulloa, Víctor Manuel Yglesias and Gilberth Aubert discussed creating a country club in Escazú. Facio contributed his sugar-cane property to the project in exchange for shares.

The company Costa Rica Country Club was formally constituted on 15 November 1940, and its first shareholders' meeting followed four days later. The club's official golf history identifies the Jaime Solera Bennett course as founded in 1940.

Did You Know?
Skeet shooting, rather than golf, was the first sport practised on the club property while the golf course was being developed.

Design Philosophy

The official club history credits Charles Lawrence Donovan as the principal designer and specifically says the course was conceived with characteristics drawn from leading Scottish links. The club characterizes the layout as demanding accuracy rather than relying simply on length.

Development

Golf took time to establish after the club's foundation, with skeet shooting becoming the first sport actually practised on the property. The country club subsequently expanded into a broad sporting institution incorporating golf, tennis, swimming and other activities.

Recognition

The club describes its golf program as an important nursery for Costa Rican players, reflecting the course's long role in the country's competitive golf history.

Today

The Jaime Solera Bennett course remains part of the private Costa Rica Country Club in San Rafael de Escazú.
