Origins

The Prairie Course is the newer of Countryside Golf Club's two courses, built more than six decades after its tree-lined companion. Designed by Robert M. Lohmann, ASGCA, it opened in 1992, at a time when Midwest public-course design was shifting toward wider, more open routings using native prairie grasses in place of mature trees.

Design Philosophy

Where the neighboring Traditional Course rewards precision and shot-shaping around timber, the Prairie Course was routed through more open ground, with wide fairways, large undulating greens, and native prairie grasses standing in for trees, asking golfers to manage width, wind, and the rough edges of unmown native grass — a style that grew popular among Midwest public-course designs in the early 1990s as architects leaned toward lower-input, naturalized landscapes.

Development

The Prairie Course was built on land adjoining the existing Traditional Course, giving the Lake County Forest Preserves District two contrasting 18-hole layouts on a single property.

Recognition

Countryside has been recognized for its environmental management, having been certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the third golf course in Illinois and the 14th in the United States to earn that distinction.

Today

Today the Prairie Course operates alongside the Traditional Course as one of three public golf facilities run by the Lake County Forest Preserves District, alongside ThunderHawk Golf Club in Beach Park and Brae Loch Golf Club in Grayslake, giving golfers a modern, open layout on the same site as an older-style parkland test.
