The Craigtoun Course is St Andrews Links' newest addition and the only heathland test among its eight courses, joining the Trust's portfolio at the end of 2025 after decades as the privately run Duke's Course. Set on high ground roughly two miles inland, its elevated position gives players sweeping views back over the town of St Andrews and the bay, a striking contrast to the flat, coastal links the destination is best known for.
The course was laid out in 1995 by five-time Open Champion Peter Thomson, initially conceived with inland-links characteristics before a 2006 renovation by American architect Tim Liddy reshaped it into a true heathland layout — introducing heather, gorse, mature trees and large, sand-blasted bunkering across several rebuilt holes. Each hole carries its own name, drawn from the surrounding Craigtoun estate and countryside, from the opening Highland to the closing Ice House.
The course is an 18-hole heathland golf course. It plays to par 71, 7,512 yards. Designed by Peter Thomson, the course originally opened in 1995. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf Lessons, Restaurant, Driving Range, Club Fitting, Bar, Pro Shop, Motorised Carts, Practice Green, and 2 more.
