Peter William Thomson (born Brunswick, Victoria, August 23, 1929; died Melbourne, June 20, 2018) achieved unparalleled success as a professional golfer—winning The Open Championship five times—and went on to become a highly influential golf course architect. After co‑founding South Pacific Golf (later Thomson, Wolveridge & Perrett), he and his partners designed over a hundred courses across more than 30 countries, with Ballarat Golf Club in Australia being one of his final domestic commissions, opened in 2009.

His design philosophy emphasized integrating courses naturally into the landscape and creating layouts enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels. Thomson’s architectural legacy is widely respected in Australia and beyond.
