Origins

Crane Meadows emerged in Weston in the early 1990s as a privately owned course intended for public play. A current GolfWisconsin profile states that the course has offered golf to the general public since 1992. The same source attributes both the design and physical creation of the course to original owner Jerry Feathers and his son, whom Golf Digest identifies as Tim Feathers.

The Feathers family operated Crane Meadows for its first 10 seasons. From the beginning it was positioned as an accessible nine-hole course rather than a private membership club, serving Weston, Wausau and the surrounding central Wisconsin area.

Crane Meadows was designed and built by its original owner, Jerry Feathers, together with his son Tim.

Design Philosophy

The available historical material does not document a formal architectural philosophy, but contemporary descriptions consistently characterise the course as a compact nine-hole layout using the existing wooded property, water and sand to create variety. The course was intended to remain approachable for newer and recreational players while providing enough hazards and strategic difficulty for more experienced golfers.

Development

Crane Meadows matured as a privately owned seasonal golf operation after the Feathers family's first decade of ownership. Older descriptions list a platform driving range for 12 golfers, a separate grass range and a practice bunker, but those practice facilities are no longer current. In 2026 the club explicitly announced that it no longer has a driving range.

The most significant recent physical development is at the clubhouse: Village of Weston planning documents from 2025 approved an approximately 1,836-square-foot addition designed to improve guest services. The expansion includes additional space for limited food, beverage and retail operations as well as new restroom facilities connected to municipal utilities. Construction was underway during the 2026 season.

Today

Crane Meadows remains a privately owned seasonal nine-hole course open to the public. Online tee times are available, and the 2026 operation offers weekday, weekend, senior, youth and twilight pricing as well as season and multi-play passes. The club continues to operate while its clubhouse expansion is being completed.

Food, drink and alcohol service remains available during construction, but the former driving range has closed.
