About Croham Hurst Golf Course

Croham Hurst Golf Club occupies an 18-hole parkland course in South Croydon. The club company was formed in 1911 after local businessmen sought a golf club close to Croydon and London. Land was leased from the Whitgift Foundation and both a nine-hole course and an 18-hole course were constructed.

The club's own history credits Scottish professional James Braid and Frederick George Hawtree with designing and building the courses. The nine-hole layout was soon abandoned after the present 18-hole course opened in October 1913. Croham Hurst is built on chalk and the club emphasizes the resulting drainage and year-round playability.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 70, 5,825m (6,370 yards). Designed by James Braid and Frederick George Hawtree, the course originally opened in 1913. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Restaurant, Bar, Practice Putting Green.

Origins

The club company was formed in 1911 by local businessmen who wanted a golf club in countryside near Croydon and London. A lease was secured from the Whitgift Foundation and golf courses were built on former agricultural land.

Did You Know?
The founders initially described the proposed club as being for gentlemen, then amended the plan to include women.

Design Philosophy

James Braid and Frederick Hawtree used the site's natural undulation and sought to preserve the character of the north Surrey countryside. The chalk base also contributes to the course's drainage.

Development

Both nine-hole and 18-hole courses were initially constructed. The nine-hole course was quickly abandoned once the present 18-hole course opened in October 1913.

Recognition

The club's professional during part of the 1950s was Ryder Cup player Harry Weetman, and the course has been played by prominent professionals including Dai Rees, Peter Alliss and Colin Montgomerie.

Today

Croham Hurst remains an 18-hole members' club that accepts visitors and societies by arrangement.
