About Del Rio Golf & Country Club

Del Rio Golf & Country Club is a private 27-hole club at 801 Stewart Road north of Modesto, California. William P. Bell designed the original 18 holes in 1946 on sandy, gently rolling ground.

The property expanded in the 1990s when Robert Muir Graves designed the River nine, built in 1996 and opened in 1997 as part of a 150-acre golf and riparian-habitat project. John Harbottle supervised reconstruction of all tees, greens and bunkers on Bell's original 18 in 1998 and later redesigned the 9th hole of the Bluff nine in 2002. Del Rio's 27 holes are arranged into multiple 18-hole combinations rather than one fixed course; the club currently cites an average Oak/Bluff Blue rating of 71.2 and slope of 124.

The course is a 27-hole parkland golf course. Designed by Robert Muir Graves and William P. Bell, the course originally opened in 1946. It is a private members' club. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Chipping Area, Practice Bunkers, Wedge Range, Golf Lessons, Pro Shop, Restaurant, and 5 more.

Origins

Del Rio was established in 1946 on land north of Modesto. William P. Bell designed the original 18 holes, using the site's sandy soil and gentle movement.

Did You Know?
Bell reportedly sketched the original 18-hole plan on a cocktail napkin.

Design Philosophy

Bell's original course followed the natural Central Valley terrain. The later River nine introduced a golf routing integrated with protected riparian habitat.

Development

Robert Muir Graves designed the River nine after a lengthy environmental approval process involving habitat for the valley elderberry longhorn beetle. Construction took place in 1996 and the nine opened in 1997. John Harbottle reconstructed the original course's tees, greens and bunkers in 1998 and later reworked Bluff No.

Today
