Diamonds Leisure Golf Club is the 18-hole course attached to Diamonds Leisure Beach & Golf Resort at Diani Beach on Kenya's south coast. The resort itself dates to 1972, while construction of the golf course began in 1992 under the supervision of designer Thomas 'Tommy' Fjastad. The current back nine was built in 1993 and the front nine was completed around 1998, the year the club staged its first Diani Beach Masters tournament.
Construction was complicated by extensive coral across the site, requiring additional land in the Shimba Hills to supply topsoil. The golf course forms part of the present Diamonds resort and is promoted as an 18-hole facility. com as its contact details.
The course is an 18-hole resort golf course. Designed by Thomas Fjastad, the course originally opened in 1998. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf course, Resort accommodation, Restaurants, Bars, Suite, Villa, Restaurant.
The resort opened in 1972 and was acquired shortly afterwards by Dr Wilhelm Meister. Meister pursued the idea of adding an 18-hole golf course, with construction beginning in 1992 under golf-course designer Thomas Fjastad.
Building the course required adapting a coral-heavy coastal site for turf. The club records that roughly 100 additional acres were acquired in the Shimba Hills to provide topsoil for construction.
The present back nine was built in 1993. The front nine followed and was completed around 1998. That year also brought the first Diani Beach Masters tournament.
Meister died in June 1993 before seeing the completed 18-hole course; the lake at the 15th hole was named Lake Wilhelm in his honour.
The course operates as Diamonds Leisure Golf Club within Diamonds Leisure Beach & Golf Resort and remains an 18-hole component of the Diani Beach property.
