Dunbar Golf Club occupies the East Links at Dunbar in East Lothian, where the club has played since 1856 and where documented golf in the town stretches back more than 400 years. The modern championship course is an 18-hole links playing to par 71, with the Black tees extending to 6,597 yards and reported at a course rating of 72 and slope of 131. The course was not the product of a single design phase.
The original 1856 layout had 15 holes and was laid out without a professional architect. An 18-hole version followed in 1880, Old Tom Morris altered seven holes in 1894, and further expansion came in 1905. Between 1922 and 1924, James Braid and Ben Sayers laid out the course substantially as it is played today.

Golf in Dunbar is documented over more than four centuries, while the Dunbar Golfing Society was playing west of the town by 1794. Dunbar Golf Club established itself on the East Links in 1856. With limited finances, the founders did not employ an architect; instead, a 15-hole course was set directly onto the natural ground.
An 18-hole, 4,701-yard course was created in 1880. Old Tom Morris altered seven holes in 1894, extending the links farther east, and another expansion followed in 1905. The decisive architectural phase came between 1922 and 1924 when James Braid and Ben Sayers produced a 6,425-yard layout that largely established today's course.
The championship length was later increased to 6,597 yards in 2008.
Dunbar's competitive history includes famous professional challenge matches involving Old Tom Morris, Willie Park, James Braid, J.H. Taylor, Harry Vardon and others. The club hosted its first Scottish PGA Championship in 1912.
The club remains an active 18-hole championship links accepting visitor play for much of the season while retaining specified members-only periods.
