Old Tom Morris (Thomas Mitchell Morris, 16 June 1821 – 24 May 1908) was a pioneering Scottish golfer whose legacy spans playing, greenkeeping innovation, and course design. He was widely known as “Old Tom Morris” and renowned for winning The Open four times, but his influence extended far beyond competition.
As Keeper of the Green at Prestwick and long‑time Custodian of the Links at St Andrews, he helped shape modern golf and its playing grounds. He designed or remodelled approximately 75 courses across the British Isles, including the initial layout at Kingussie Golf Club in 1895 and work at Strathpeffer Spa Golf Club in 1896.
His designs are prized for integrating natural terrain and strategic interest, laying down a legacy that endures in classic courses today.
