East Devon Golf Club occupies cliff-top heathland at Budleigh Salterton and plays to par 70. The present club course opened on 31 March 1902 after Captain Robert Tosswill laid out the initial course. N.
Palairet and Herbert Fowler subsequently influenced its early development, while Harry Colt carried out the work in the 1920s that largely established the modern layout. James Braid later advised the club in the 1930s, with the current eighth hole and eighteenth green among the features attributed to his work. The course measures 6,344 yards from its longest published card.
The course is an 18-hole heathland golf course. It plays to par 70, 6,344 yards. Designed by Harry Colt and Captain Robert Tosswill, the course originally opened in 1902. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Chipping Green, Practice Bunker, Pro Shop, Golf Lessons, Restaurant, Clubhouse.
Golf in Budleigh Salterton predates the current course. The earlier nine-hole Budleigh Salterton Golf Club occupied land east of the River Otter. Access and the limitations of a nine-hole site encouraged development of the present club, whose new heathland course opened on 31 March 1902.
Captain Robert Tosswill produced the initial layout. Early modifications involved R.C.N. Palairet and Herbert Fowler, but the modern course is principally the result of Harry Colt's 1920s work.
James Braid advised the club in the 1930s. Since 2020 East Devon and Clinton Devon Estates have pursued a programme intended to restore heathland characteristics and encourage native heather and vegetation.
East Devon has been selected as an England Golf championship venue on several occasions.
The club remains an 18-hole heathland course with member and visitor play and an active ecological restoration programme.
