Esker Hills Golf Club is an 18-hole inland course near Tullamore, County Offaly, routed across glacial eskers, valleys, lakes and woodland. The modern course was conceived by the Molloy and O'Brien families, and Christy O'Connor Jr. began design work in 1994 with Tom Byan as main contractor.
O'Connor deliberately minimised soil movement and used the natural sand-and-gravel ridges left by retreating Ice Age glaciers. The course opened in the 1990s, with contemporary reporting placing the full 18-hole opening in 1997. From the Blue tees the established scorecard measures 6,619 yards at par 71; White and Green men's tees measure 6,176 and 5,822 yards, while the Red women's course is 5,043 yards at par 72.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 71, 6,052m (6,619 yards). Designed by Christy O'Connor Jr., the course originally opened in 1997. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Restaurant.
The landscape was formed by retreating Ice Age glaciers, which deposited long ridges of sand and gravel known as eskers. Historical research cited by the club indicates that a nine-hole course once existed near the present 16th tee. The modern project was revived by the Molloy and O'Brien families.
Christy O'Connor Jr. began work in 1994 with contractor Tom Byan. His approach was to move as little soil as possible, routing holes over the natural sandhills, valleys and plateaux and incorporating existing lakes and woodland.
The underlying sand and gravel also provide natural drainage.
The modern 18-hole course was completed during the mid-1990s and contemporary reporting records its opening in 1997. The club subsequently developed permanent clubhouse facilities after initially operating from more basic accommodation.
Esker Hills became closely associated with Shane Lowry, who developed his game at the club before winning the Irish Open as an amateur in 2009 and later the Open Championship in 2019.
The course retains O'Connor's original routing through the eskers and remains open to members and visiting golfers.
