About Fairmont St Andrews - Torrance Course

The Torrance Course is an 18-hole, par-72 modern links-style course at Fairmont St Andrews. It opened in 2001 and now extends to 7,230 yards from the championship tees. The original project involved Sam Torrance, American golf architect Denis Griffiths and Gene Sarazen; contemporary accounts identify Griffiths as providing much of the technical architectural work, with Torrance closely involved in the design and Sarazen contributing design concepts before his death.

The course was substantially reconfigured around 2008-09, including eight new holes, ahead of major tournament use, with Torrance returning to work on that redesign. It hosted the Scottish Senior Open, served as an Open Championship Final Qualifying venue and staged DP World Tour events including the Scottish Championship in 2020 and Hero Open in 2021 and 2022. The routing incorporates revetted bunkers, old stone boundary walls and exposed coastal terrain overlooking St Andrews Bay.

The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,611m (7,230 yards). Designed by Gene Sarazen and Sam Torrance and Denis Griffiths, the course originally opened in 2001. It is open to resort guests. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Driving Range, Golf Academy, Pro Shop, Resort Accommodation, Restaurants, Spa.

Origins

The course was developed as part of the St Andrews Bay resort project on coastal ground outside St Andrews. Gene Sarazen contributed early ideas, while Denis Griffiths supplied architectural expertise and Sam Torrance worked closely on the course that carried his name.

Design Philosophy

The layout applies links principles to exposed coastal terrain, using revetted bunkering, wind, changes in elevation and old stone boundary walls as strategic and visual elements.

Development

A substantial redesign around 2008-09, with Sam Torrance again involved, introduced eight new holes and prepared the course for tournament use, including the Scottish Senior Open and Open qualifying.

Recognition

Its championship history expanded with European Tour/DP World Tour events, including the Scottish Championship and Hero Open.

Today

The Torrance remains Fairmont St Andrews' par-72, 7,230-yard tournament course alongside the Kittocks Course.
