Fulford has an unusually substantial tournament history for an inland English members' club: it hosted the inaugural Women's British Open in 1976, many editions of the Benson & Hedges International Open and later elite amateur championships. Its best-known incident came in the 1981 Benson & Hedges event, when Bernhard Langer climbed an ash tree beside the 17th green and played his ball from the branches. Fulford continues to host R&A Open Regional Qualifying and provides a professional shop, practice facilities, clubhouse and visitor golf.

Fulford's history began in 1906. The club later sought a permanent site at Heslington Lane; James Braid was consulted over the suitability of the land, and Major Charles MacKenzie designed the course that established Fulford's long-term home.
MacKenzie's course uses predominantly sandy inland ground, tree-lined corridors, heather and strategic bunkering. Later renovation work by Mackenzie & Ebert sought to refresh elements of the historic layout while tree clearance allowed areas of heather to be re-established.
Fulford evolved from a local York club into a significant professional tournament venue. Its course later underwent a multi-year refurbishment by Mackenzie & Ebert, alongside tree-management work intended to recover aspects of the site's heathland character.
Fulford became internationally familiar through decades of tournament golf. It staged the first Women's British Open in 1976 and numerous Benson & Hedges International Opens, attracting players including Tony Jacklin, Lee Trevino, Greg Norman, Sandy Lyle and Bernhard Langer. The R&A continues to use Fulford for Open Regional Qualifying.
Fulford remains a members' club that accepts visitor golf and continues to stage high-level qualifying and amateur competition. Its tournament heritage remains an important part of the club's identity.
