George Wright Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-70 municipal course in Hyde Park owned and operated by the City of Boston. Donald Ross was commissioned to design the course in the late 1920s, but the original private-club project stalled after the 1929 market crash. The project was later revived with Works Progress Administration funding and opened as a public course in 1938.
From the Blue tees the current course measures 6,440 yards with a 69.5 rating and 126 slope; White measures 6,096 yards and Red 5,131 yards. Construction was unusually extensive: the city's history records 60,000 pounds of dynamite used for excavation, 72,000 cubic yards of fill and 57,000 linear feet of drainage pipe. The City of Boston resumed direct operational control in 2004.
The course is an 18-hole golf course. It plays to par 70, 5,889m (6,440 yards), course rating 69.5 and slope rating 126. Designed by Donald Ross, the course originally opened in 1938. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Clubhouse Grill.
The project began in the late 1920s after a group of Boston citizens gained control of the Grew estate in Hyde Park and sought development of a golf course. Donald Ross was commissioned to design it, but the market crash of 1929 halted the proposed private-club development. In 1932 Walter Irving Johnson, a former Ross associate working as an engineer for the Metropolitan District Commission, became involved in reviving the project.
Federal Works Progress Administration funding enabled construction to proceed during the Depression. The difficult site required major engineering works, including extensive rock blasting, filling of low ground and drainage installation. At peak construction the project reportedly employed about 1,000 workers.
By completion, the 156-acre property contained an 18-hole course, a perimeter rock wall and a large Norman-style clubhouse. The course opened to public play in 1938.
Following periods of contracted management and declining conditions, the City of Boston resumed operational control in 2004. Subsequent restoration brought renewed recognition, including Golf Digest's 2009 selection as Massachusetts's best municipal course and Golfweek's ranking of George Wright as the 14th-best municipal course in the United States that year.
George Wright remains a City of Boston-owned public golf course. The current Blue course is 6,440 yards, par 70, and the facility continues to operate alongside the city's William J. Devine Golf Course.
