Ghala Golf Club, historically known as Ghala Valley Golf Club, is an 18-hole, par-72 course in Muscat. The club dates to 1971, when Colonel Cooper established a modest nine-hole sand course, making Ghala the oldest golf club in Oman according to the club's current history. The layout occupies a natural wadi at the foot of the Al Hajar Mountains.
Bill Logmuir designed the course, and the later grass conversion followed the earlier sand-course routing as closely as practicable. The first nine holes of the grass course reopened in December 2010 and the back nine were completed in 2012. The club now has a fully grassed 18-hole course and more than 250 members.
The course is an 18-hole desert golf course. Designed by Bill Logmuir, the course originally opened in 1971. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Chipping Green, Practice Bunker, Pro Shop, Club Hire, Locker Rooms, Golf Carts, and 2 more.
The club traces its history to 1971, when Colonel Cooper established a modest nine-hole sand course in Ghala. Golf in Oman at the time was commonly played on sand rather than irrigated turf, and the original Ghala course became one of the country's long-standing centres for the game.
The course occupies a natural wadi, with the surrounding Al Hajar Mountains and the narrow valley shaping the routing. The current club credits Bill Logmuir with the design. Historical descriptions of the grass conversion say the new layout was intended to follow the old brown-course routing as closely as possible.
Ghala was progressively transformed from its original sand course into a grass course. The first nine grass holes reopened in December 2010 and the back nine were completed in 2012, creating the present 18-hole configuration.
The club now describes itself as having more than 250 members and an 18-hole fully grassed course. Its practice complex includes putting, chipping, bunker and driving-range facilities, and the clubhouse has undergone renovation.
