About Ral Al Hamra 9 hole PDO Golf Club

Ras Al Hamra Golf Club is a nine-hole golf course in Muscat that uses multiple tees, double greens and alternative green locations to produce a full 18-hole, par-71 playing sequence. The club states that the resulting 18-hole configurations range from about 5,400 to 6,500 yards. Golf has been played here since 1969, when the facility began as a sand course.

It was later redesigned as a fully grassed course by Graham Marsh Golf Design while retaining a desert character through the arid wadi, coastal hills and native planting. Ras Al Hamra is notable as Oman's first completely floodlit golf course, allowing all nine physical holes to be played after dark. The club operates as a semi-private facility and accepts visitor play subject to booking.

Origins

Golf at Ras Al Hamra dates to 1969, when the course opened as a sand layout serving the Ras Al Hamra community associated with Petroleum Development Oman. It predates Oman's modern generation of fully grassed championship courses.

Did You Know?
Nine physical holes use multiple tees and double or alternative greens to create an 18-hole par-71 round.

Design Philosophy

Graham Marsh Golf Design transformed the facility into a grass course while maintaining a landscape appropriate to the surrounding arid wadi and coastal hills. The redesign makes unusually intensive use of the nine-hole footprint: multiple tee positions, large double greens and separate alternative greens change the playing angles and lengths between the first and second circuits.

Development

The major transformation was the conversion from sand golf to grass. Floodlighting was incorporated across the course, creating the first fully floodlit golf course in Oman and enabling both daytime and night golf.

Today

Ras Al Hamra remains a nine-hole semi-private facility capable of producing an 18-hole par-71 round. Visitor play is available subject to advance booking, and the golf operation is distinct from the adjacent Ras Al Hamra Recreation Centre.
