Ghyll Golf Club sits near Barnoldswick on the historic Lancashire-Yorkshire boundary. The club owns 11 physical holes, with nine selected at any one time to form either the Tudor or York course configuration. Its history dates to October 1907, when 11 local men met in Earby to establish a nine-hole club.
Formal play began in May 1908 after land at Thornton Hall Farm was leased and a professional from St Annes advised on the original layout. The modern configuration evolved considerably: land losses in the 1950s required replacement holes, while two further holes were added in the 1990s using land that had been bequeathed to the club decades earlier. The Tudor course is the combination most commonly used today.
The course is an 11-hole parkland golf course. The course originally opened in 1908. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Function Room, Buggy Hire.
The club traces its beginnings to an October 1907 meeting of 11 men in Earby. Land at Thornton Hall Farm was leased for £25 a year, and a professional golfer from St Annes advised on the nine-hole layout. Formal play began in May 1908.
A major rent increase in 1953 forced the club to buy a smaller parcel of land and lose three original holes. Three replacements were in use by 1955. Tree planting and bunkering altered the course from the 1960s onward.
After an abandoned proposal for a conventional 18-hole expansion, two holes were constructed in the 1990s on previously bequeathed land, producing the 11-hole arrangement used today.
Nine of the 11 holes are used at any one time, forming the Tudor or York course. The Tudor combination is the more commonly played configuration.
