Gilling Castle Golf Club is a nine-hole parkland course in the grounds of Gilling Castle in North Yorkshire. The club's own history states that Ampleforth College constructed the original course in 1960 with advice from the professional at Strensall, initially for College and Community use. Local golfers gained organized access around 1972, when the predecessor club began to take shape.
The current white front nine measures 2,691 yards and plays to par 34; separate back-nine tee positions allow an 18-hole round over the same nine greens. The official club page publishes WHS ratings of 66.9/126 for the men's White course and 65.3/122 for men's Red, with a women's Red rating of 70.7/125 for an 18-hole round. The land around Gilling Castle was sold in late 2022, after which the organization adopted the Gilling Castle Golf Club name.
The course is a 9-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 34, 2,691 yards, course rating 33.4 and slope rating 126. The course originally opened in 1960. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Changing Rooms, Professional Coaching.
The course was constructed by Ampleforth College in 1960 with advice from the golf professional at Strensall. It was originally intended for the College and monastic Community. Around 1972, Fairfax Arms licensee Frank Amies negotiated an arrangement enabling local people to use the College course, providing the basis for the organized golf club.
The nine-hole routing uses sloping parkland around Gilling Castle. Several holes lie along valley sides, while the longer holes reach higher ground. Separate tee positions allow the nine greens to play differently during an 18-hole round.
The club gradually reconstructed older greens, added tees and improved drainage. A new timber-framed clubhouse was built by members in 2010-11. Responsibility for maintenance changed several times: the Abbey Trustees took direct responsibility in 2010, and following sale of the castle and grounds in late 2022, the new ownership group took over course maintenance in 2024.
The organization now trades as Gilling Castle Golf Club and operates independently of Ampleforth College. Visitors can pay and play without advance booking, using an honesty-box system when required.
