About Gleneagles Golf Resort

Gleneagles is a historic multi-course golf resort near Auchterarder rather than a single par-72 course. Its golf offering comprises the 18-hole King's Course, 18-hole Queen's Course, 18-hole PGA Centenary Course and nine-hole Wee Course, for 63 holes in total. James Braid, assisted by Cecil Key Hutchison, was commissioned in 1914 to create the original courses.

The King's and the initial nine holes of the Queen's officially opened on 1 May 1919; the Queen's was later extended to 18 holes. Jack Nicklaus designed the course that opened as the Monarch's in 1993 and was renamed the PGA Centenary Course in 2001. That course hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup and 2019 Solheim Cup.

The course is a 63-hole resort golf course. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and James Braid and Cecil Key Hutchison, the course originally opened in 1919. It is open to resort guests. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Golf Academy, Putting Green, Short Game Practice Area, Pro Shop, Club Hire, Buggy Hire, Accommodation, and 2 more.

Origins

The golf project preceded the hotel. Caledonian Railway general manager Donald Matheson envisaged a destination built around golf and hospitality, and in 1914 James Braid and his assistant Cecil Key Hutchison were appointed to create two courses. The King's and the initial Queen's layout officially opened on 1 May 1919.

Did You Know?
The King's and the original nine-hole Queen's Course officially opened on 1 May 1919, five years before the Gleneagles Hotel.

Development

The Queen's began as nine holes and was extended to 18 by 1925. A further nine-hole course designed by head greenkeeper George Alexander appeared in 1928 and was later expanded into the Prince's. In the 1980s plans began for a new championship course.

Jack Nicklaus designed the Monarch's Course using the former Glendevon Course, part of the Prince's and additional land. It opened in 1993 and became the PGA Centenary Course in 2001. Nicklaus later modified it ahead of the 2014 Ryder Cup.

Recognition

Gleneagles has been associated with elite tournament golf for more than a century. The King's hosted major professional events soon after opening, and the 1921 International Challenge Match between British and American professionals is regarded by Gleneagles as an inspiration to the Ryder Cup. The PGA Centenary later staged the Ryder Cup itself in 2014 and the Solheim Cup in 2019.

Today

The resort operates three 18-hole championship courses plus the nine-hole Wee Course, alongside extensive practice, tuition, equipment-hire, hospitality and accommodation facilities.
