About Golfclub Interlaken-Unterseen

Golfclub Interlaken-Unterseen is an 18-hole, par-72 parkland course in Unterseen in the Swiss canton of Bern. The club was founded in 1963 after a much earlier history of organised golf in the Interlaken area dating to 1904. Bernhard von Limburger and Donald Harradine planned and built the present course.

Construction began in late 1963, the first nine holes entered play at Pentecost 1965, and the second nine followed in summer 1966. The current course measures between 4,933 and 6,202 metres depending on the tees. From 2003 to 2005 the layout underwent a major reconstruction by Scottish architect John Chilver-Stainer: tees and greens were rebuilt and new streams, lakes and ponds were incorporated alongside a broader renaturation project connecting waterways toward Lake Thun.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,202m. Designed by Bernhard von Limburger and Donald Harradine, the course originally opened in 1966. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Short Game Area, Pro Shop, Restaurant, Clubhouse.

Origins

Golf in the Interlaken region predates the present club. An earlier course opened in 1904 on land later associated with the military airfield, and hosted the International Swiss Championship in 1907. Golfclub Interlaken-Unterseen itself was founded in 1963 at the initiative of local tourism figures.

Bernhard von Limburger and Donald Harradine were commissioned to plan and build the present course, with construction beginning in late 1963.

Did You Know?
Organised golf was being played in Interlaken in 1904, almost six decades before the present club was founded.

Design Philosophy

Chilver-Stainer's reconstruction replaced tees and greens and added streams, lakes and ponds as part of an environmental programme that renaturalised waterways leading toward Lake Thun. The club identifies compatibility with the surrounding natural environment as a central objective of the project.

Development

The first nine holes entered play at Pentecost 1965 and the second nine opened in summer 1966. Infrastructure expanded steadily thereafter, with new changing facilities, pro-shop space, storage, restaurant space, a new clubhouse in 1993-94 and a rebuilt practice range opened in 2000. From autumn 2003 through summer 2005, John Chilver-Stainer directed a comprehensive golf-course reconstruction.

Today

The club operates an 18-hole par-72 course, driving range, short-game area, restaurant and pro shop and accepts visitor tee-time bookings during its golf season.
