Great Northern is an 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course in Kerteminde on the Danish island of Funen. It opened in July 2017 as the first Nicklaus Design course in Denmark, with the design work led for the firm by senior design associate Dirk Bouts. The main course extends to approximately 6,775 metres from its furthest tees, while four recommended tee positions range from 4,562 to 6,347 metres.
The routing moves between elevated ground and lower wetland areas, with seven artificial lakes created during development and wind treated as an important element of the design. Great Northern also has a separate nine-hole Academy Course, extensive practice facilities, a golf clubhouse and pro shop, restaurant, hotel accommodation and spa facilities. The main course is accessible to visiting golfers with a course licence and handicap of 36 or lower.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,775m. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the course originally opened in 2017. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Grass Driving Range, Short Game Area, Putting Green, Chipping Area, Practice Bunker, Indoor Golf Studios, Golf Lessons, and 12 more.
The project began with Thomas Kirk Kristiansen's ambition to create a major golf course in Kerteminde, at the time described by those involved with the development as the only Danish municipality without a golf course. Kristiansen and his associates had played widely overseas and approached several design groups before selecting Nicklaus Design. The property was conceived as more than a conventional members' club: from the outset the plan combined an internationally capable championship course with an academy layout, training facilities and a clubhouse intended to serve both local golfers and visitors.
Development transformed former agricultural terrain near the Great Belt into a purpose-built golf property, and Great Northern opened for play in July 2017.
Nicklaus Design's work was led by senior design associate Dirk Bouts. Rather than impose one visual character across the entire property, the team used two contrasting parts of the site. Elevated holes work around a hill with views toward the sea, while lower portions of the routing occupy wetlands and newly created water features.
Bouts specifically identified wind as a central design consideration because changing coastal conditions can substantially alter how the course plays from day to day. Large shaped bunkers, strategic lakes and carefully positioned greens form recurring elements of the routing. The course was also designed to accommodate a broad range of ability through multiple teeing grounds, while retaining sufficient length and difficulty for elite tournament golf.
Construction involved extensive reshaping of what had been comparatively gentle agricultural terrain. More than 3.4 million tonnes of earth were moved, seven lakes were created and substantial elevation changes were introduced. Great Northern ultimately opened in July 2017 with an 18-hole championship course, a nine-hole Academy Course and extensive practice infrastructure.
The wider resort continued to expand after the golf opening, adding spa, restaurant and accommodation facilities. In June 2026 Great Northern opened a new hotel building containing 52 additional rooms and suites. The golf operation now includes a 16-bay covered and illuminated driving range, a grass tee line, a 1,500-square-metre short-game area and indoor training studios.
Great Northern quickly attracted international attention as Denmark's first Nicklaus Design course. Golf Digest currently lists it at No. 35 among the best courses in Continental Europe.
Its original ambition to stage major professional golf was realised in August 2026, when it became a DP World Tour venue for the first time as host of the Danish Golf Championship. The tournament was played from 13 to 16 August, with Danish golfer Jeff Winther winning at 15 under par. The Tour used a par-72 tournament configuration measuring 7,314 yards, demonstrating the additional championship length available beyond the regular recommended tee sets.
Great Northern operates as a destination golf and leisure property in Kerteminde. The main 18-hole course is available to members and daily-fee visitors with a course licence and handicap of 36 or lower, while the nine-hole Academy Course accepts golfers with handicaps up to 54. Recommended tee sets on the championship course range from 4,562 metres to 6,347 metres, with further back tees extending the course to approximately 6,775 metres.
The property combines golf with a restaurant, spa, hotel accommodation and meeting facilities, and maintains a substantial practice complex. Visiting golfers can book seasonal green fees directly through Great Northern or GolfBox.
