Guildford Golf Club occupies chalk downland on Merrow Downs in Surrey and dates to 1886, making it the oldest golf club in the county. The club began with six holes before expanding to 18 and gradually shifting eastward onto the present ground. Its most important architectural intervention came after J.
H. Taylor and his partner Frederick George Hawtree were invited to review the course in 1925. By 1927 they had introduced new short holes, removed several blind shots and added bunkering, returning in 1934 to create what is now the seventh hole.
The course is an 18-hole heathland golf course. Designed by J. H. Taylor and Frederick George Hawtree, the course originally opened in 1886. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Warm-up Range, Short Game Area, Pro Shop, Clubhouse, Bar.
Guildford Golf Club was founded on Merrow Downs in 1886 by Colonel W. Bannatyne, Major W. Pontifex and E.
L. Hooper with support from the 4th Earl of Onslow. The first course had six holes and quickly expanded to eighteen.
The course gradually migrated eastward to its present ground. J. H.
Taylor and Frederick George Hawtree were commissioned in 1925 and introduced substantial changes by 1927, returning in 1934 for another alteration. Howard Swan later advised further modernization. Recent work has included scrub and tree clearance and bunker renovation intended partly to recover older sightlines.
The club continues to occupy the chalk Merrow Downs and markets the course as a historic downland layout rather than a conventional tree-lined parkland course.
