About Heron Ridge Golf Club

Heron Ridge Golf Club is an 18-hole public course in Virginia Beach, Virginia, designed by Fred Couples and Gene Bates and opened in spring 1999. The par-72 layout extends to 7,017 yards from the Boom-Boom tees. The current USGA National Course Rating Database lists those tees at 74.0 with a slope of 138.

Five principal tee sets range from 7,017 yards down to 5,011 yards. The course was conceived in the late 1990s with Couples participating directly in the design alongside Bates rather than simply lending his name to the project. The routing uses a site with mature trees, wetlands, natural depressions and elevation variation unusual for the immediate Virginia Beach area.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 7,017 yards, course rating 74 and slope rating 138. Designed by Fred Couples and Gene Bates, the course originally opened in 1999. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Chipping Area, Pro Shop, Club Rental, Snack Bar, Golf Cart Rental.

Origins

Plans for Heron Ridge were announced in 1997, with Fred Couples and Gene Bates selected to design a public golf course on the Virginia Beach site. Construction was expected to begin that year, and the completed course opened in spring 1999.

Did You Know?
Fred Couples' role was described at the project's launch as genuine design participation rather than a naming endorsement.

Design Philosophy

The design makes use of wetlands, mature hardwoods, natural depressions and changes in elevation on a site where that degree of topographic variation is relatively unusual for Virginia Beach.

Today

Heron Ridge operates as a public daily-fee course with five principal tee sets and seasonal pricing, including Virginia-resident, military, junior, senior and twilight rates.
