Golf Course Architect
Fred Couples (born October 3, 1959 in Seattle, Washington) is best known as a major-winning PGA Tour professional; in the early 1990s he entered golf course design, co-founding Couples Bates Golf Design (later Bates Golf Design Group) with Gene D. Bates.
His design role is typically described as bringing a player’s strategic insight, overlaying front-line experience onto Bates’s architectural expertise. One of their noted collaborations is The Rise Golf Course in Vernon, British Columbia, unveiled in 2008 as the only Fred Couples Signature course in Western Canada.
The layout capitalizes on dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views to create both beauty and playability for a range of abilities.
