Houghton Golf Club is an historic Johannesburg club whose original course dates to 1926. M. Copland, the club's first professional, laid out the initial course on heavily treed, undulating Highveld ground.
Houghton subsequently became an important tournament venue, hosting eight South African Opens beginning in 1951 as well as the Alfred Dunhill Championship. To modernise the course for contemporary equipment and playing distances, the club later commissioned Jack Nicklaus Design to create a new layout. The modern design uses strategically positioned bunkers as a primary defence rather than relying simply on extreme length, an approach particularly relevant at Johannesburg's altitude.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. Designed by A.M. Copland, the course originally opened in 1926. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Driving range, Practice putting greens, Practice bunkers, Golf academy, TrackMan, Pro shop, Restaurant, Conference facilities, and 3 more.
Houghton's first course was laid out in 1926 by A.M. Copland, the club's first professional. Copland worked with a heavily treed and notably undulating Highveld property.
As golf equipment and playing distances evolved, Houghton decided that the course required substantial modernisation and appointed Jack Nicklaus Design. The replacement design relies heavily on strategically positioned bunkering to influence club selection and driving lines rather than attempting to defend the course through length alone.
Houghton has a long championship record. The club states that it has hosted eight editions of the South African Open, beginning in 1951, and has also staged the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
The current club combines the Nicklaus-designed course with extensive practice facilities, a golf academy, restaurant, conference and event operations and other sporting amenities.
