Humber Valley Golf Course

Origins

Humber Valley's history is complicated by the fact that two related but distinct golf facilities have carried the name. Before the mid-1950s, Humber Valley Golf Course referred to a semi-private course farther along the west bank of the Humber River, extending from the Humber Sewage Treatment Plant north toward King's Mill Park. The Stanley Thompson Society dates that earlier course to 1921 and records a nine-hole design associated with Thompson, Cumming and Thompson.

The present facility emerged separately in the 1950s. Metropolitan Toronto acquired 40.9 hectares from Summerlea Golf Club in December 1957, creating what became the second public golf course operated by Metro Toronto. The new Humber Valley Golf Course opened in March 1958 following a combined acquisition and development expenditure of $357,554.

Design Philosophy

No reliable source located during this research identifies a single architect responsible for the complete 1958 municipal layout. The City of Toronto does, however, specifically attribute two existing holes to Stanley Thompson: the 14th, a par 4 measuring 392 yards from the Blue tees, and the 15th, a 167-yard par 3. Those two holes occupy some of the more pronounced terrain on the property and are singled out by the City as the course's featured holes.

The broader routing follows the contours of the Humber River valley, combining narrow, tree-lined corridors with changes in elevation. Because Thompson's documented work also includes an earlier Humber Valley course that pre-dated the current municipal facility, attributing the entire present course to him would overstate what the available evidence supports.

Development

The largest documented modernization came in 1992, when Metro Toronto Parks and Culture completed a $1.25 million renovation. The project constructed numerous new tees and greens, realigned fairways and added an automated irrigation system. These changes materially altered the course from the configuration inherited by Metro Toronto in 1957.

The property has nevertheless remained a compact municipal layout rather than being lengthened to modern championship dimensions. The current regulation scorecard remains under 5,500 yards from its longest Blue tees.

Recognition

Humber Valley's significance comes primarily from its place in Toronto municipal golf and its surviving connection with Stanley Thompson rather than from national course rankings. In September 2021, Golf Canada selected Humber Valley to host the inaugural Canadian All Abilities Championship. The 36-hole national event established gross stroke-play and net Stableford competitions for men and women with disabilities, and Golf Canada continues to identify Humber Valley as the venue where the championship began.

Today

Humber Valley remains one of the City of Toronto's public golf courses and is open for daily-fee play. The current course has 18 holes and plays to par 70, with Blue, White and Red tee options. The City publishes separate adult, senior, junior, nine-hole and twilight rates, with online tee-time reservations accepted up to seven days in advance.

The facility includes a clubhouse and pro shop, while golf clubs, pull carts and riding carts are available for rent. A SoloRider cart is provided free of charge for golfers with mobility impairments.
