Golf Course Architect
Stanley Thompson (1893–1953) was a Canadian golf course architect revered for his mastery of natural terrain, who built or remodeled roughly 145 to over 178 courses across Canada and abroad. Launching his career in the post–World War I Golden Age, he formed Stanley Thompson & Co.
Ltd and collaborated with prominent figures such as Robert Trent Jones, Geoffrey Cornish, Howard Watson, and Robbie Robinson, mentoring a generation of architects. His use of minimalism—letting nature guide design—created visually stunning and strategically rich layouts, including Banff Springs, Jasper Park, Highlands Links, St.
George’s, Dundas Valley, Islington, and St. Catharines.
A founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, he was later proclaimed a Person of National Historic Significance and inducted into multiple halls of fame.
