About Isle of Purbeck Golf Course

Isle of Purbeck Golf Club is a historic Dorset club founded in 1892. Its main Purbeck Course is an 18-hole heathland layout playing to par 70 and approximately 6,295 yards, while the property also contains the shorter nine-hole Dene Course. The golf is set within a nature reserve above Poole Harbour.

Origins

The club was founded in 1892 as rail access brought increasing numbers of summer visitors to the Swanage and Studland area. Detailed historical research credits Arthur Jackson with laying out the original nine holes. The club later became known as Studland Bay Golf Club.

Did You Know?
Children's author Enid Blyton and her husband Dr Darrell-Waters were once owners of the golf club.

Design Philosophy

The original course used the exposed heathland terrain and natural contours above Poole Harbour. Later expansion retained the heathland character, with heather, gorse and undulating ground remaining central to the course's defence.

Development

Dr Darrell-Waters and his wife Enid Blyton were among the club's owners. Darrell-Waters sold the club in 1965 to Mr Randolph of the Wilkinson Sword family. During the 1960s the course was expanded, with J.

Hamilton Stutt associated with important additions. In 1966 the Isle of Purbeck Golf Club name was restored and a new clubhouse, still in use, was built. More recent renovation work has involved Lobb + Partners.

Recognition

The Purbeck Course is regularly included in English course rankings and is particularly associated with its heathland setting and views across Poole Harbour.

Today

The club operates the 18-hole Purbeck Course and nine-hole Dene Course from its Corfe Road site and accepts visitor bookings.
