Kooralbyn Valley Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 resort course at Kooralbyn in Queensland's Scenic Rim. Designed by Desmond Muirhead, it opened for play in October 1979 and hosted the Queensland Open in 1981. The championship card is approximately 6,991 yards and rated 75/136.
Muirhead used the valley terrain to create markedly different nines: the front follows valleys and watercourses while the back makes greater use of the basin's lakes. The long downhill par-3 fifth, dropping almost 100 feet from tee to green, became one of the course's best documented holes. Kooralbyn closed in 2008 and was substantially restored before reopening in 2016.
The course is an 18-hole resort golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,991 yards, course rating 75 and slope rating 136. Designed by Desmond Muirhead, the course originally opened in 1979. Kooralbyn was developed in the late 1970s as Australia's first purpose-built golf resort. Desmond Muirhead was commissioned to design the course and worked on site with designer and shaper Fred Bolton. Golf opened in October 1979 and the resort quickly gained a national profile.
Muirhead used the property's pronounced valleys, ridges and watercourses rather than flattening the site. The front nine follows the natural valleys while the back nine moves into the lake-dominated basin. The dramatic downhill fifth is one of the most recognisable results of that approach.
After years of ownership changes, the resort closed in 2008. Peter Huang later acquired the property and oversaw a substantial restoration ahead of the 2016 reopening. The work included rebuilding all 18 greens, reshaping bunkers and replacing the irrigation system; Marcus Lane of Atlas Golf participated in the green redesign.
Kooralbyn hosted the Queensland Open only two years after opening. It was later associated with the development of players including Adam Scott and Jason Day through the nearby Kooralbyn International School golf program, and returned to Australian course rankings after its restoration.
The course operates as part of The Kooralbyn Valley resort with public golf, competitions, group golf, accommodation, dining and other resort recreation.
