About Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa - Premier Course

The Premier Course is one of the distinct golf layouts at Macdonald Portal Golf & Spa near Tarporley in Cheshire. It should not be confused with Portal's longer Championship Course or the shorter Arderne Course. Macdonald's current course page lists the Premier at 6,538 yards, par 71 and SSS 73 and records its opening in 1990.

The routing uses the natural changes of level along the Cheshire sandstone ridge, with each hole occupying a separate section of the undulating parkland. The current 6,538-yard scorecard has an outward par of 35 and inward par of 36, with four par threes and three par fives across the round. Portal operates as a hotel and golf resort, so visitors can play the Premier Course and use the associated clubhouse, accommodation, dining and spa facilities.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 71, 6,538 yards. Designed by Andrew Murray, the course originally opened in 1990. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Bars, Dining, Accommodation, Spa, Suite, Lodge, Cabin, and 3 more.

Origins

The Premier Course was developed as part of Portal's multi-course golf complex at Tarporley and opened in 1990. Former European Tour professional Andrew Murray performed the opening, although Macdonald does not describe him as the architect.

Did You Know?
Portal contains three separate golf layouts, so the Premier Course's statistics are frequently confused online with the longer Championship Course.

Design Philosophy

The routing follows the pronounced natural contours of the Cheshire sandstone ridge. Macdonald emphasises the separation and individual character of the 18 holes rather than a repetitive out-and-back routing.

Development

Portal subsequently developed into a broader hotel, golf and spa resort with the Premier Course operating alongside the separate Championship and Arderne layouts.

Today

The Premier remains an 18-hole, par-71 visitor-accessible resort course. Macdonald currently publishes it at 6,538 yards with an SSS of 73.
