Mount Juliet Estate's golf course is an 18-hole, par-72 parkland layout at the estate near Thomastown in County Kilkenny. It is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design and opened in 1991, with its inauguration marked by a match between Nicklaus and Christy O'Connor Snr. The established championship scorecard measures 7,264 yards, with a 76.1 course rating and 143 slope from the blue championship tees.
Nicklaus incorporated extensive strategic bunkering and water into the routing: the estate says five constructed lakes influence six holes and more than 80 bunkers are positioned around the course. Mount Juliet subsequently became an important tournament venue. It staged the Irish Open in 1993, 1994 and 1995, the WGC-American Express Championship in 2002 and 2004, and returned as Irish Open host in 2021 and 2022.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,642m (7,264 yards), course rating 76.1 and slope rating 143. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the course originally opened in 1991. Golf became a major part of the historic Mount Juliet Estate when Jack Nicklaus was commissioned to create a Signature Design on its County Kilkenny parkland. The course opened in 1991, with the occasion marked by a match between Nicklaus and Irish golfer Christy O'Connor Snr. It was Nicklaus's first design in Ireland and quickly moved into tournament golf.
Nicklaus used the estate's parkland together with constructed water and extensive bunkering to create the strategic framework. Mount Juliet states that five lakes affect six holes and that more than 80 bunkers are distributed through the layout. Among the distinctive features is the 16th green, where a wall and a large surrounding bunker form an unusual green complex.
The course's profile rose quickly after opening. It hosted three consecutive Irish Opens from 1993 through 1995, followed by the Irish Seniors Open in 1999. International attention increased substantially when Mount Juliet staged the WGC-American Express Championship in 2002 and again in 2004.
The 2002 WGC brought the world's leading players to County Kilkenny, with Tiger Woods winning by one stroke. Ernie Els won the tournament's return in 2004. Mount Juliet later returned to the Irish Open rota in 2021, won by Lucas Herbert, and 2022, when Adrian Meronk became the first Polish winner on the DP World Tour.
The Nicklaus course remains the golf centrepiece of Mount Juliet Estate. Its modern tournament record now spans more than three decades, including Irish Opens in the 1990s and 2020s, two World Golf Championships and the 2025 OFX Irish Legends.
