About Onewhero Golf Club

Onewhero Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 course at Pukekawa in northern Waikato, around 40 minutes south of central Auckland. The club was formed in 1929 and moved several times before golf began at its present site in 1961. The current course measures 5,488 metres according to the club's official website.

It occupies mature rural parkland on the fertile Franklin area's volcanic, free-draining soil, which helps the course remain playable through much of the year. The routing passes through established trees and areas of native bush, with bunkers and water hazards forming part of the course. The club welcomes casual visitors as well as members, corporate groups and societies, and online tee times are available through Golf New Zealand.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 5,488m. The course originally opened in 1961. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Putting Green, Practice Bunker, Pro Shop, Golf Lessons, Club Fitting, Golf Club Hire, Golf Cart Hire, Pull Cart Hire, and 3 more.

Origins

Onewhero Golf Club dates its broader club history to 1929. Independent New Zealand golf-history research records that the organisation moved several times during its early decades rather than remaining on one property. The club name comes from the nearby Onewhero district, but the present golf course is in Pukekawa.

Golf has been played at this site since 1961. No reliable source located during this pass identifies a professional architect responsible for either the original club layouts or the current Pukekawa course, so the course should remain architecturally unattributed.

Design Philosophy

The present course is a compact 18-hole, par-72 parkland layout measuring 5,488 metres. Its character comes primarily from the existing rural landscape rather than documented architectural theory. Mature trees line many holes, while water hazards and bunkers place a premium on keeping shots in position.

Native bush remains within the property and attracts native birdlife. The course sits on fertile volcanic soil characteristic of the Franklin area; the club specifically notes its free-draining nature as a reason the course is rarely forced to close.

Development

The main documented change in Onewhero's history is geographic rather than an identified architectural renovation. Founded in 1929, the club occupied multiple locations before establishing its current course at Pukekawa in 1961. Over time the property matured into an established 18-hole course with a two-storey clubhouse and supporting practice and golf-service facilities.

No sufficiently authoritative source found during this research documents the dates, designers or precise scope of later hole alterations, so none are attributed.

Recognition

Onewhero is primarily a regional club rather than a nationally ranked championship venue. It remains affiliated with Golf New Zealand and has staged organised regional and club golf. In March 2022 the course was selected as the golf venue for the Clubs New Zealand Pen Hawkins Rosebowl, hosted in association with Pukekohe Cosmopolitan Club.

Today

Onewhero remains an 18-hole golf club welcoming both members and visitors. The official club site directs golfers to Golf New Zealand's booking platform for tee times. Its current course is par 72 and 5,488 metres long, with casual golfers, societies and corporate groups accepted.

The club's current contact details list Main Road, Pukekawa, with a club office and pro-shop telephone service.
