Origins

Local sportsmen met in Orsett on 14 October 1899 to form a golf club. The earliest membership included local landowners, businessmen and military officers. Golf began on leased ground in the district of Mucking and Fobbing, and the club initially operated from very basic facilities.

Did You Know?
Early members reportedly left their golf clubs in the hollow of an oak tree before a proper clubhouse existed.

Development

By 1906 members were already discussing extension to 18 holes. In the late 1920s a new clubhouse was constructed and James Braid extended the course. The course continued to change through the twentieth century.

Beginning in 2012, James Edwards Golf Design undertook a phased bunker-restoration programme intended to restore the traditional appearance and strategic character of the Braid bunkering.

Recognition

Orsett has repeatedly been selected for Open Championship regional qualifying and is described by Golf Course Architecture as Essex's only heathland course.

Today

Orsett remains an 18-hole members' club with visitor access and a course whose historic Braid character continues to guide renovation work.
