Golf Course Architect
James Edwards is a British golf course architect who transitioned from professional golf and building architecture into course design in the late 1990s. He trained in golf course design at Heriot‑Watt University, then spent eight years under mentorship at Swan Golf Designs before founding his own practice, Edwards Design International (EDI‑Golf Ltd) in 2009.
He has developed a reputation for creating engaging short‑game and par‑3 facilities as well as golf academies across the UK and Europe. One of his notable early independent commissions was the nine‑hole par‑3 course at Cumberwell Park Golf Club (Wiltshire), opened in 2016, featuring an island green and flexible routing for loops of 2–9 holes; he later returned to design the back nine, incorporating inert‑landfill shaping, mature oaks, and a meandering stream.
His work emphasizes organic shaping, versatile play formats, and integration of environmental and customer‑journey considerations.
