Pearl Valley was conceived as a championship golf development in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley. Jack Nicklaus and Nicklaus Design developed the course to make use of the existing valley landscape rather than separating the golf from its surroundings.
Nicklaus incorporated existing natural features, fynbos, lakes and the area's seasonal winds. The par 3s and par 5s are oriented in different directions so changing winds affect them differently through a round.
The course officially opened in November 2003. Its tournament profile grew when it hosted the South African Open in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Pearl Valley has remained prominent in South African rankings; the club reports a third-place position in South Africa's Top 100 Golf Courses for 2023.
Pearl Valley operates within Val de Vie Estate, with non-member booking available through the club alongside member play. Golf facilities include an academy, practice green, golf shop and locker rooms.
